Frequently Asked Questions
What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers, mainly composed of hyaluronic acid, are a gel-like substance used to restore volume and structure to the face, neck, and even chest and hands. Hyaluronic acid is a compound naturally found in our bodies that attracts water and allows our tissues to become hydrated and plump. The HA levels in our bodies naturally deplete as we age, making fillers a great option for volume and hydration restoration.

Another type of filler, called Radiesse, contains calcium hydroxylapatite, a compound naturally found in our bones and skin. This revolutionary filler not only provides instant volume but also stimulates Collagen 1, Collagen 3, and Elastin production in the tissues for 8 months after injection. This means Radiesse helps your body rebuild structure and volume that has been lost with age.

Not all fillers are the same, as there are many different compositions, some of which are more flexible or more rigid than others, depending on their intended area of use. The only way to know which filler is right for you is by consulting with a qualified aesthetic provider.

Where can dermal fillers be used?

Dermal fillers can be used to restore volume and structure to the lips, chin, jawline, temples, and cheeks. Dermal filler can also be used for the improvement of hollow and dark under eyes. Radiesse filler is approved for use in most of the above areas as well as for use in the neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs for volume and structure restoration of thin and sagging skin.

How long do dermal fillers last? Can they be reversed?

Most dermal fillers provide lasting results for 12-18 months with some lasting 18-24 months.

Dermal fillers can absolutely be dissolved. Reasons for dissolving include undesirable migration or if a previous provider’s work is no longer yielding satisfactory results.

Dissolving and refilling with a fresh base is a great option for many clients who have received filler services years ago and are no longer pleased with the treated area.

Dermal filler can also be dissolved emergently if a vascular occlusion is suspected. Although rare, vascular occlusion is the most significant risk when injecting dermal fillers. An occlusion decreases blood flow to the affected area causing pain and paleness to the area and must be treated in a timely manner.

What is the healing time after dermal filler treatment?

Dermal filler treatment is a comfortable procedure that requires 2-3 days of true downtime, meaning no intense exercise or heat exposure, with full filler settle and healing at the two week mark. During the days immediately post-treatment, you may experience bruising, swelling, and lumps or bumps. These are all normal and should subside within two weeks. Most clients report major reduction in swelling by one week post-treatment.

Excessive pain, bruising, and paleness to the treated area, although rare, are not normal and should be reported to your aesthetic provider immediately.

Pre & Post-Treatment care
Pre-Treatment Care
  • Avoid alcohol and medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen for at least 48 hours prior to treatment to minimize risk of bruising and bleeding
  • Avoid smoking as this can delay healing time
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Notify your provider of any history of cold sores around the mouth as an anti-viral medication can be prescribed and started prior to treatment to minimize risk of cold sore development
  • Be sure not to schedule any significant travel within one week after your filler appointment. This is to ensure access to your provider in case of a vascular occlusion, although rare.
Post-Treatment Care
  • Stay hydrated!
  • Avoid directly touching or rubbing the area for 24 hours to reduce introduction of bacteria and risk of displacing any freshly placed filler
  • Apply a cold compress to minimize swelling and bruising for the first 24-48 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heat exposure for 24-48 hours to minimize swelling
  • After 72 hours, you may apply a warm compress and gently massage any lumps or bumps that are present. These are normal and gentle massage helps the filler integrate into the tissue
  • Immediately notify your provider of extensive bruising, paleness, or severe pain to the area
  • No out of state or prolonged travel x1 sweet to ensure access to your provider in case of emergency
